Hello readers,

Many of you in India might be familiar with Twinkle Khanna as a popular columnist in featured in the Times of India and DNA. Others abroad will remember her from movies like Baarsat, Baadshah or acting alongside her husband, Akshay Kumar, in Thank You and Holiday.

Today Crossword Bookstore held the book launch of her first opus, Mrs. Funnybones (She's just like you and a lot like me).

Twinkle arrived accompanied by renowned journalist Pritish Nandy, who was in charge of her interview. The session was followed by a Q&A and book signing by the author.

A mother, a woman and a fun-filled writer, Twinkle Khanna came across during her launch as light-hearted and no-nonsense as she does in her columns. She proved once again that she is a voice of opinion to be listened to and she drew much praise from her interviewer and the audience.

"Laughter and love" she signed on each fan's book copy and such we wish her too, in hopes that she will continue to make Indians reflect and laugh.

It has been a long while but we're back to talk about the burning topic of the court's verdict on Salman Khan's hit-and-run case, in which Salman Khan, under the influence of alcohol, drove his car into a bakery injuring four people and killing one man.

The incident happened 13 years ago in 2002. Salman fans and other Bollywood aficionados have been reading about it since then, including several twists and turns, in particular what had been suspected to be false testimony by one of the famous actor's employees.

The Mumbai Court has sentenced Salman Khan to 5 years of imprisonment in Arthur Road jail. As we write, there are reports of a request for bail.

The case has been controversial not only because Khan has claimed that his driver, and not him, was behind the wheel at the moment of the accident. There have also been several irregularities, such as the fact that no fingerprints were taken after the accident to confirm who was driving the car at the moment or the fact that not all key witnesses were examined.

It has come as a surprise to most that Bollywood celebrities have been tweeting in full support of an actor who has been convicted by the court. Singer Abhijeet has been among the most cited, his quotes not being the most intelligent, socially conscious or classy. Others have been more serene and moderated in expressing their concern for the superstar, such as Hema Malini, Alia Bhatt or Varun Dhawan.

The River to River Indian Film Festival has been delighting Italian moviegoers for 14 years. It was yesterday at the Blue Frog Mumbai that its India Chapter came to life through the screening of a brief anthology of the festival's winners in the category of documentary film. The event kicked off with a trio of short films who won the Advantage India award, granted by the jury of partnering film distributor Pocket Films.

Film maker, Samvida Nanda, was present to receive the 1st Advantage India Prize for her short film The Frame and actor Krishna Wadia responded to a brief Q&A session on 3rd prize winner, Rani, by Manish Sharma, a film that was also awarded at the London Indian Film Festival.

Chappalled, the 2nd prize Advantage India winner by film maker Yusuf Abidin, was a highlight that we personally recommend. It is an excellently written and extremely refreshing short mockumentary that had most of the audience smiling or laughing throughout, thanks to its satirical view of politics, corruption and the media in India.

The River to River component presented its three high-caliber awarded documentaries.

Hechki (Hiccups) by Kartik Singh, keeps a tight plot pace that results in a warm ending. Chronicles of a Temple Painter by Shravan Katikaneni, deserves a special mention due to its content and craft. Through expert editing and the story of a simple family, Katikaneni succeeds in depicting the delicate subjects of communalism and social justice in India. Hank and Asha by James E. Duff was also a charmingly pleasant view. The long-distance relationship between the protagonists is impeccably shot, down to the dialogue and acting.

It was a successful first time event that we hope will find continuity in the cinema event niche in Mumbai.

Last December, the All India Bakchod (AIB) troupe of comedians participated in what is known throughout the world as a "roast", meaning a comedy event in which consenting famous people appear and are openly joked about in front of a paying audience. The style of humor that characterizes a roast is adult language and jokes being made about one and the other.

The AIB Knockout roast was the first ever to be organized in India and it was hosted by star director and producer Karan Johar. The event starred Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, and at a lesser degree Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone and Sonakshi Sinha, who all took turns being roasted by the panel on stage and heartily laughed at the jokes being made about them.

Multi-talented Mathias Duplessy, who has the music of numerous films in India and abroad to his credit, together with mesmerizing singer Mukhtiyar Ali, took an audience of connoisseurs through a touching musical journey this last Sunday. The duo are otherwise known for the beautiful music of Homi Adjania's Finding Fanny soundtrack but obviously also nurture long and musically inventive careers - read our review of the Finding Fanny soundtrack here.
The Hindi Cinema Blog saw its first days in France, created by blogger Aline Cinehindi, and made a special point to cover Indian events taking place in that country. In honor of this, we are pleased to announce that Amitosh Nagpal's and Atul Kumar's Piya Behrupiya will be shown in the South of France this February, most precisely in the coastal city of Nice.

The result is a growing feeling of abandonment that makes Niranjan a hurt and detached young man who gets easily exasperated with his family obligations. Once in India, his charming sister Janaki (Priya Bapat) will take him on a fantastic trip that will ignite an inner discovery.
Time to revisit Crime Master Gogo and the playful equation between the legendary Amar and Prem (and their love interests) this month as Andaz Apna Apna is almost confirmed for re-release in cinemas. Director Rajkumar Santoshi and the cast are being equally called to appear in shows to promote the film again and reminisce about the cult following the film achieved, which has ended up in countless petitions to the director and actors throughout two decades to make a sequel.
This week I eagerly received a book from India I was waiting for. Sonia Golani's Decoding Bollywood holds 15 interviews with Indian film directors. I kept wondering what the interviews would be like and what I myself would have wanted to ask the same directors if I had been lucky enough to spend time with them.

Sonia Golani lives in Bombay and has written two books prior to Decoding Bollywood, focusing on the path followed by highly achieving people, such as female business leaders. Given this background, I was a bit apprehensive (though curious) about reading her account on creative people, who at the core are supposed to be different from finance-driven professionals. Which perspective would she use to showcase the inspired minds behind some of my favorite films?

Vishal Bhardwaj's Haider has been the talk of the town since October 2nd in India, but it is in Rome that the film has bagged its first award, the People's Choice Award in the World Cinema category, becoming the very first Indian film to be granted that honor.

Actors Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor attended the festival along with director Vishal Bhardwaj to represent the film based on Shakespeare play Hamlet, adapted to the Kashmiri conflict.

Diwali has had its host of topics to write about, from news on a French film based on the Mumbai 2008 terrorist attacks to commenting on the Shah Rukh Khan - Deepika Padukone starrer Happy New Year or reviewing Katrina Kaif and Hrithik Roshan's Bang Bang... However, the following piece of news seems personally more noteworthy and therefore I will give all above-mentioned topics the skip.

After recently working for television with Ashutosh Gowariker, AR Rahman is looking forward to starting the production of his maiden film, following in the footsteps of celebrated Vishal Bhardwaj who successfully transitioned from the music industry into film making.

The film will be in Hindi and will be set in North India. Rahman's new role as a producer should allow him to succeed in his pursuit to create music that is more representative of his own musical essence. It will equally open unlimited avenues to manifest his music visually, which he has been preparing for by being involved in the making of music videos.

When questioned about whether he would be willing to take on the filmmaking director's seat, Rahman acknowledges that film direction is not in his plans anytime soon. Working alongside film directors such as Danny Boyle and Mani Ratnam however did facilitate his interest and exploration of filming techniques, which will in turn allow him to be fully involved in the making of his first film.

© Hindi Cinema Blog – All rights reserved

Granted. Homi Adajania's Finding Fanny has enjoyed a fair number of accolades since its recent release this October. However, the Hindi Cinema Blog would like to focus today solely on the film's music. Yes indeed, we all have been particularly dead set on listening to the soundtrack's four songs by world music ace Mathias Duplessy (known for his work in films such as Peepli Live and Delhi in a Day) and Sachin-Jigar every time we get a chance since August and have become so seduced by them that we are recommending the album to friends and family in India and around the world. Here is why:

Following a hurried crowd funding campaign recently organized by the MAMI, the Mumbai Film Festival has successfully avoided falling short of the budget necessary to open its 2014 edition, bound to take place from October 14 to 21. The support of the festival's friends but also that of the Indian film industry played a pivotal role in recovering the odds of enjoying one of the city's flagship events.

The proof is in the opening of seat reservations at the MFF official website to
enjoy the refined and eclectic selection of films screened in cinemas
across Mumbai from more than 65 countries. Events and celebrities
present for the festival (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Catherine Deneuve,
Helen, Kalki Koechlin, Deepika Padukone, Akshay Kumar, Imran Khan and
Ranbir Kapoor among others) are also testimony to the relevance and
influence of the festival.

Among the highly promising or already internationally acclaimed Indian
films featured in the festival, the Hindi Cinema Blog recommends
watching out for the following 10 films to experience a representative
portrayal of current trends in Indian cinema:

A very special film has been all the rage this year at the Toronto Film Festival and has obtained the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema Award for Best Asian Film. Margarita with a Straw has been rightly called one of the strongest independent films India has produced in recent years.

Margarita With a Straw hails from the talent of Shonali Bose, the film maker who was highly acclaimed for intense dramas, such as Amu and Chittagong. Her new film might be gathering attention partly because it explores topics that are rare to Indian cinema, such as disability or homosexuality. Nonetheless, the value of the film, which is Bose's most intensely personal project, starring Kalki Koechlin, lies well beyond its novelty.
