Granted. Homi Adajania's Finding Fanny has enjoyed a fair number of accolades since its recent release this October. However, the Hindi Cinema Blog would like to focus today solely on the film's music. Yes indeed, we all have been particularly dead set on listening to the soundtrack's four songs by world music ace Mathias Duplessy (known for his work in films such as Peepli Live and Delhi in a Day) and Sachin-Jigar every time we get a chance since August and have become so seduced by them that we are recommending the album to friends and family in India and around the world. Here is why:
Fanny Re / Mahi Ve: Both titles correspond to tracks one and two of the album, which are versions of the same song with differing lyrics (one of the versions is mainly in Hindi, the other in Punjabi). Duplessy has created a gorgeously refreshing sound to represent Goa through the mystic and uplifting voice of Rajasthani singer Mukhtiyar Ali against the backdrop of gypsy jazz, using a swinging mix of accordeon, banjo and guitar reminiscent of southern Europe.
The Finding Fanny
soundtrack is joyfully not the only occasion in which both musicians
have come together to create delectable music. The duo released an album
in 2012 called Jeena Jeena, for the delight of music lovers (samples of album tracks are available for listening here).
Ding Dong: This track maintains the gypsy jazz vivacity and features the pleasantly gritty voice of Duplessy himself singing in English with tuba, clarinet, human clapping, back vocals and whistling thrown into the quirky recipe for good measure, giving the song the right cadence and character to stick with you throughout the day and give an extra bounce to your every step.
Shake your Bootiya: Sachin-Jigar have revved up to present listeners an electronic samba dance tune graced with Divya Kumar's warm and peppery vocals which has everything required to get anyone on the dance floor. It is often that Latino rhythms are distorted in Indian soundtracks in an attempt to suit the ear of Indian audiences, not so in this track, which we are sure will still make a hit with dance music lovers in India and around the world.
All in all, the choice of composers and performers has been wise and we dare say that even by itself, the soundtrack to Finding Fanny could be successful in making audiences see Goa's colonial vibe through a new and invigorating lens. Goa, você agora é bem mais que portuguêsa! (Goa, you are now much more than your Portuguese roots!)
