PABLO TRAPERO and VIKAS SWARUP: An Indian Mystery

© Hindi Cinema Blog

Anyone tuned into the world cinema scene and particularly Latin American cinema is surely familiar with Pablo Trapero's socially relevant films. Almost twenty years of his work have been applauded throughout the world, with films such as Rolling Family, Lion's Den, and White Elephant (featuring superstar Ricardo Darín). He was named President of the Un Certain Regard category at the Cannes Film Festival 2014. His newest project has taken him to Delhi and Mumbai to film the adaptation of Vikas Swarup's novel Six Suspects. Vikas Swarup is better known to literature lovers as the author of the book having inspired Slumdog Millionaire by Danny Boyle. The author read the script and expressed satisfaction with how the adaptation of his book was carried out.

Six Suspects is a murder mystery revolving around six party guests. The book has been adapted into film by John Hodge (from Trainspotting and The Beach). Given both Hodge's and Trapero's taste for gritty and sincere cinema, a lot of expectation is currently building up regarding this particular association. Speculation regarding the casting of Amitabh Bachchan in the film has also sparked a lot of media talk in the past few months. One thing is certain: this will be Pablo Trapero's first feature film made entirely in English, thus expanding the enjoyment of his talent to many more shores.

Hailing from Buenos  Aires, Pablo Trapero has recently mentioned to the press how the film making crew has been philosophical and patient about filming in India during monsoon. He has also expressed how he finds Indian and Argentinian cultures similar in various ways.

Vikas Swarup's third book will also be made into a Bollywood film by Sriram Raghavan (Johnny Gadar, Agent Vinod).

Pablo Trapero is on board Paul Raphael and Working Title’s India-set crime drama adapted from Vikas Swarup’s novel by John Hodge.

The film will be Trapero’s first entirely English-language feature.
Six Suspects
Trainspotting and The Beach writer John Hodge has adapted Vikas Swarup’s novel in which six guests at a party are accused of killing the son of an Indian cabinet minister.
Swarup famously wrote the novel Q & A, which went on to become Danny Boyle’s smash hit Slumdog Millionaire.
Starfield’s Paul Raphael told Screen that he anticipates the production getting under way in India next autumn.
He produces with Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. BBC Films has backed development and will also partially finance the production.
Raphael said: “I’m delighted to be in league with such supportive partners as Working Title and BBC Films and we’re all thrilled to have a director of Pablo’s calibre on board. Work is under way on the shooting draft with John Hodge and we expect to be filming in India late 2013.”
Acclaimed director Trapero was in competition in Cannes in 2008 for Lion’s Den. Titles White Elephant and 7 Days in Havana both screened in Un Certain Regard earlier this year. His films also include 2004 festival hit Rolling Family.
